Volunteer in Israel - How best to support Israel’s communities in need

In the wake of ongoing conflict in Israel and across the region over the past year, volunteering in Israel has emerged as a powerful means through which diaspora Jewry has shown support for the nation. Organizations like Masa, Birthright, Onward, and Leket have mobilized thousands of volunteers from diverse backgrounds and age groups, all committed to supporting Israel. They have been lending a hand across various sectors such as agriculture, education, and food security. These

dedicated individuals have sacrificed their winter and summer holidays to spend weeks and months contributing to the resilience of affected communities in Israel. The impact of these volunteers cannot be overstated. They have filled crucial gaps left by reservist soldiers, emigrants, and individuals unable to resume their daily routines due to caregiving responsibilities in the aftermath of conflict.

Despite the recent ceasefire, communities in Israel continue to require assistance and support.

Volunteer opportunities in Israel:

Masa Israel swiftly implemented their 4 and 6-week Masa Volunteers programs nationwide, offering benefits such as remote work options and partial flight subsidies.

Birthright Israel Onward is facilitating short-term volunteering experiences lasting 8-14 days, focusing on food security operations and 8-day programs on Kibbutzim for rebuilding efforts post-October 7.

Sar El places volunteers directly on IDF bases to assist with defensive logistical operations, now offering 20 hours of first aid training in partnership with Magen David Adom. They also have an upcoming initiative, providing volunteer opportunities for parents of lone soldiers, who wish to act in support of their sons and daughters currently in the army.

Leket Israel, a long-time provider of volunteer opportunities in Israel at its logistical head-quarters in Gan Haim, has begun matching volunteers with farmers in need.

Livnot U'Lehibanot have been running immersive Israel trips since the 1980s. Their southern volunteer program, aimed at rebuilding Israel’s southern communities, allows volunteers to contribute to the renewal of kibbutzim, kindergartens, impacted homes, and other community centres.

Sword of Iron has been catering to the huge desire shown Gens X and Y to support Israel. This Facebook group has been a source of collective unity for those generations, who are looking to find more ad hoc volunteer opportunities across Israel. The group has provided a real safe space for volunteers to discuss and share opportunities, and has a real community feel to it that its members absolutely love.

Here at Yahel Israel, we have just re-launched applications for the 2025/26 cohort of our flagship 9-month Fellowship program. The fellowship offers participants the chance to work hand-in-hand with local community members on a grassroots level, to enact the type of long-term sustained change that Israel’s communities need so badly at this time.

Support communities being left behind by volunteering in Israel

Despite the commendable efforts of organizations and volunteers, there remains a critical need to address the challenges faced by marginalized communities in Israel. Refugee, immigrant, and underserved communities in Israel's periphery have long struggled with limited resources, and the recent events have only exacerbated their hardships. While it is crucial to support those directly affected by recent events, it is equally important not to overlook the ongoing struggles of these historically under-resourced communities. Yahel has a history of supporting these vulnerable communities, and now more than ever, their support is vital. As resources are redirected towards rebuilding efforts in other parts of the country, these communities are left even more vulnerable. Families are grappling with increased poverty, substance abuse, and domestic challenges, with young people bearing the brunt of these difficult circumstances. It is imperative that we continue to prioritize and support these communities in need.

Enhancing Impact through Long-Term Israel Volunteer programs

The impact of the countless volunteers that have come to Israel engaging in short and mid-term volunteer experience cannot be understated. They have each shown a level of commitment and dedication in giving up part or all of their holiday periods from school or work commitment, and it is truly a credit to diaspora Jewry around the world.

However, our partners on the ground emphasize the unparalleled impact of longer-term volunteering.

Here are some of the benefits of sustained support:

Continuity and consistent Support: Long-term volunteers have the opportunity to witness the evolution of projects and offer more pertinent guidance as they become increasingly familiar with the organization's activities.

Mentorship and Guidance: Acquiring a comprehensive understanding of an organization requires commitment and perseverance. Volunteers who are highly involved play a crucial role as invaluable assets, forming the backbone of the organization and establishing a strong support system.

Community immersion: When it comes to development projects, the presence of dedicated volunteers plays a pivotal role in fostering trust within communities. This trust is essential for the seamless implementation of initiatives aimed at driving positive change. Moreover, volunteers' deep-rooted understanding of local culture and language enables them to seamlessly integrate with the project, organization, and the community they serve, resulting in a more harmonious and effective collaboration.

Sustainable volunteering: The presence of long-term volunteers is crucial for the success of sustainable volunteer projects. Their commitment ensures continuity and stability, allowing them to play a key role in shaping and implementing effective, long-term strategies for NGOs. By prioritizing the community's needs and working towards sustainable goals, these dedicated volunteers contribute significantly to the development and growth of impactful initiatives.

Impact on the volunteer: Moreover, it is essential to acknowledge the profound impact volunteering has on the volunteers themselves. Building trust and forming genuine connections with a community takes time and effort. True immersion cannot be rushed or achieved overnight. If you aspire to fully integrate into Israel's lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path communities – those less accustomed to hosting tourists – it is advisable to commit to a more extended volunteering period.

In conclusion, long-term volunteering offers a unique opportunity for both the local community and the volunteer to create sustainable change and foster meaningful connections. By committing to an extended period of service, volunteers can truly immerse themselves in the culture, understand the needs of the community, and work towards long-lasting solutions. This not only benefits the local community by providing consistent support and resources but also allows volunteers to experience personal growth, develop new skills, and gain a deeper understanding of global issues. Ultimately, long-term volunteering is a powerful way to make a lasting impact and create positive change that extends far beyond the duration of the volunteer experience.
