Yahel Fellows: Serving When It Matters Most

The 2024/25 Yahel Social Change Fellowship has launched with extraordinary resolve and purpose during an unprecedented time in Israel. Our newest cohort of Fellows has shown remarkable dedication, choosing to serve communities when their presence and support matter most.

This year's Fellowship cohort brings together passionate individuals from Canada, the United States, Guatemala, and Colombia. Each Fellow dedicates 30 hours weekly to serving communities across Israel, working in the vibrant cities of Kiryat Haim in Haifa, Lod, and Ramat Eliyahu in Rishon LeZion. Through their diverse placements, Fellows make meaningful contributions at local schools, community centers, and non-profit organizations, fostering cross-cultural connections while addressing community needs through hands-on service.

In their first months, while deepening their understanding of their host communities, Fellows have thrown themselves into vital projects with unwavering commitment. A standout example is their work renovating community shelters in Lod's Rasko neighborhood. Working shoulder-to-shoulder with local volunteers, they're ensuring these critical facilities stand ready to protect and serve community members when needed – work that carries particular weight in the current climate.

The cohort's opening seminar at Givat Haviva marked a profound beginning to their year of service. Against the backdrop of regional challenges, Fellows focused on building empathy, vulnerability, and effective communication – skills that have proven invaluable in their daily interactions with communities under stress.

Their recent Community Seminar built on this foundation, exploring how community bonds can be a powerful catalyst for positive change, especially during difficult times.

Across their three placement cities, Fellows have fully immersed themselves in their volunteering work. Through monthly City Learning Days, they engage deeply with local leaders and community members, gaining crucial insights into each community's unique challenges and resilience. Their presence and dedication serve as a powerful reminder of the strength found in showing up for one another during challenging times.
