We are passionate about people working side by side to bring about personal and social change
About Yahel
Yahel was founded in 2009 with the belief that responsible volunteer programs in Israel have the power to transform both individuals and communities. In Hebrew, Yahel means to illuminate. We believe that service learning can connect people, shed light on real life issues, illuminate personal journeys and promote social change.
Yahel's volunteer programs are grounded in experiential learning and effective social action. Since our first program in fall of 2010, more than 400 participants have served in cities and neighborhoods across the country, and thousands of individuals have benefited from the contribution of our volunteers. The combination of hands on service work along with in-depth learning and immersion in Israeli society defines our programs that range from 2 weeks in length to 9 months, designed for teen, college aged, and adult participants.
Mission
Our mission is to respectfully assist communities in Israel while inspiring young adults to build a relationship with Israel and develop skills for a life of civic engagement.
The goal of our work is threefold:
SERVE
Participants on Yahel programs volunteer with Israeli grassroots organizations throughout the country, working closely with community members and local change-makers. We work tirelessly to identify projects that can benefit from our contributions in order to create sustainable change both for our participants and the local communities they serve.
CONNECT
Through deeply immersive programming, participants form relationships based on respect and understanding, creating ties that will last long beyond the program. Through our programs, participants reach a deeper understanding of some of the key social issues facing Israeli society today, and in turn gain a deeper understanding of the country, its traditions, and its people.
CARRY IT HOME
Our programs are designed to empower participants long after the program has ended. With a better understanding of Israel and what meaningful service work looks like, our participants leave with more than memories; they leave with the tools and inspiration they need to become change-makers, no matter where they are in the world.
